The Barrett family

John Byrne Barrett   ( ca 1882/1885 - 1946)

~ Army 2nd Lieutenant and Professor of Mathematics ~

husband of
Margery May Gibson

~ ca. 1882 or 1885

1.          JOHN BYRNE BARRETT  was born ca. 1882 or 1885.

Father:     John Barrett

Mother:   ---?---  ---?---

The newspaper notice of his death says he was age 61 in 1946 which calculates to being born ca. 1885.

The age in the death index says he was age 64 when he died in 1946 which calculates to being born ca. 1882.

On the 1953 marriage certificate of his daughter, Mary Monica, to Robert English, his middle name is spelled "Byrnes".  But on the 1976 death certificate of his wife, Margery May, his middle name is spelled "Byrne".  The source of these information on both certificate is his daughter Monica.

Research note:

Both the names Byrne and Barrett are used by the Irish people as surnames.

John Byrne Barrett was a Roman Catholic and that he had a daughter named Bridget, makes it likely that this Barrett family before originally came from Ireland.

~ 1909

In 1909, John Barrett beat out the competition when he applied for and was tested among others for the job of Assistant Examiner in the Patent Office.

From the newspaper, The London Gazette, August 3, 1909:

After Open Competition.

Board of Trade:  Assistant Examiner in the Patent Office, John Barrett.

~ 1910's

According to the birth certificate of his daughter of 1920, he was an "Ex Army" so this mean he was in the Army and probably retired after World War I which ended in 1918.

There are pension and service records of several John Barrett that served during World War I that are available to search.  But without knowing when exactly or where he was born and that his father has the common name of John too, it makes it hard to narrow down to the correct John  Barrett on the pension records.

To those who gave us practical help and hospitality at the time, to others who have sent such wonderful presents from all over the world, and to those who distributed them we would like to say how immensely grateful we are, and to add that such wonderful kindness and generosity have more than wiped out the unpleasant memories of the floods.

We are, Sir, yours faithfully,
