Sir John Barr Johnston ( 1843 - 1919 )
A history about Sir John Barr Johnston is mentioned below.
From the Diamond War Memorial Project website:
Major Robinson’s father-in-law, John B. Johnston, was born in 1843, the son of Mr John Johnston, of Beragh, County Tyrone. He came to Londonderry as a young man, and built up a prosperous business in the agricultural, implement and seed line.
In 1877 he married a daughter of Mr Alexander Weir, of Ballindrait, County Donegal. He entered Londonderry Corporation circa 1885, and was elected Alderman a few years later. He became Mayor in 1897, was re-elected the following year, and became High Sheriff of the County of the City of Londonderry in 1900.
Besides his connection with the Corporation, Johnston was a member of the Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners, of which body he was chairman in 1909; a vice-chairman of the Governing Body of the Londonderry City and County Asylum;
President of the Londonderry Chamber of Commerce, 1905-6; a Life Governor of the Londonderry and North West Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital and the Londonderry Y.M.C.A; a Grand Juror and Justice of the Peace for the county of Londonderry, and Justice of the Peace for the county of Tyrone.
In addition, he acted as one of the joint hon. Secretaries of the City of Londonderry Unionist Association, and chairman of the Convoy Woollen Company, Ltd. During his Mayoralty, Johnston had the honour of welcoming the future King George V and his Queen, then the Duke and Duchess of York, to Londonderry.
He was knighted in 1899, and died suddenly on Wednesday, February 12, 1919, about 4 p.m., in a restaurant while waiting for his order to be carried out. His wife, Lady Johnston, had died only a few weeks earlier.
