Peter Pickingill   ( 1826 – 1890 )

 

 

7.           PETER PICKINGILL  was born ca. 1826 in Hockley, Essex, England and was christened February 18, 1827 at the church in Hockley.   On the baptism record his name is spelled Peter Pittingale.

Peter Pickingill lived with his parents in Hockley from the time of his birth in 1826 until by 1841 when he and his father were living in Canewdon, Essex.

 

In 1841, Peter Pickingale and his father were living in the Inn of the Innkeeper Henry Slade in Canewdon, Essex.  Peter and his father, Charles, were Agricultural Laborers.

In 1851, Peter Pickingale, age 23, was a visitor in the Crown Inn, North street in Rochford, Essex.  The Innkeeper was Peter Wright.  Peter Pickingale was an Agricultural Laborer.

It is not known if there is any relationship between Peter Pickingill and the Ann and Thomas Pittingale who where in the Crown Inn too.

 

In 1853, Peter Pickengill, signed up for duty in the Royal Navy and served 1 year on the ship H.M.S. Monarch.

Apparently Peter Pickingill lied about his birth date in order to sign up.  He joined in on November 12, 1853 was discharged the following year on November 14, 1854.  The whole time was with the ship H.M.S. Monarch.

The H.M.S. Monarch was an 84-gun second rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on December 18, 1832 at Chatham Dockyard and was broken up in 1866.

The Crimean War lasted from October 1853 to February 1856.   Peter Pickingill joined the Royal Navy because of the Crimean War.

 

In 1861, Peter Pickinggil and his father, Charles, were visitors in the household of Jonathan Fordham in Streat, Essex.  Peter and his father were Agricultural Laborers.

Peter Pickingill married JANE WRIGHT, in 1862.

From the England and Wales Civil Registration Indexes, we find the following Marriage entry from the Indexes:

Jane was born ca. 1816 in Paglesham, Essex.  She was the widow of John Wright  an Agricultural Laborer who probably died in 1861-1862.

In 1871, Peter and Jane Pittingell, were living in Rayleigh, South Benfleet, Essex.  Peter was an Agricultural Laborer.

From the 1871 Census of Rayleigh, South Benfleet, we find the following:

In  1881, Peter Pickingell is a Lodger in the Crown Inn in Mucking, Essex.  Ephraim Warren was the Innkeeper.  Peter is an Agricultural Laborer.

From the 1881 Census of Mucking, we find the following:

Note that it mentioned that Peter is unmarried.

 

Also in 1881, Jane Pickinggill was living in South Benfleet, Essex.  Jane was a Laundress.

From the 1881 Census of South Benfleet, we find the following:

Note that it mentioned that Jane is married.

 

In 1890, Peter Pickingale died in the Workhouse at Rochford, Essex and was buried February 20, 1890 at the church at Canewdon, Essex.

The following is the burial entry from the Canewdon parish register:

In 1891, Jane Pickingale, age 75, is in the Workhouse at Rochford, Essex.

From the 1891 Census of the Workhouse in Rochford, we find the following:

Name - Relation to Head of Family, or Position in the Institution - Condition as to Marriage - Age Sex - Profession - Where born

Jane Pickingale   Pauper  Widow  75 F          [As for where born] unable to give information (n k)

 At the top of the page it states “Return of all the persons who slept or abode in this Institution on the night of Sunday, April 5th, 1891”.

 

The above entry was for April 5, 1891.  About 2 1/2 weeks later, Jane Pickengall was buried.

 

Jane Pickengall died in the Workhouse in Rochford, Essex and was buried April 22, 1891 at the church at Canewdon, Essex.

It does not appear that Peter Pickingill had any children with his wife Jane.  The granddaughters shown in the 1871 and 1881 censuses are from Jane and her first husband John Wright.
