34.           WILLIAM GEORGE PUNT was born ca. 1886 in Grays, Essex.  According to his British Army WWI Pension records, William was age 32 in 1916 and that would put him born in 1884.

In 1891, William G. Punt, age 5, scholar, was living with his parents in Grays Thurrock, Essex.  His Uncle, Frederick Pickingale, was living with them.

From the 1891 Census of Grays Thurrock, Essex, we find the following:

William George Punt was described as born in Grays Essex and was 5 feet 10 inches tall with a weight of 162 lbs.

 

Assigned to the Coldstream Guards.  He served in several Battalions in the Unit.

1916 Sep 29 --- At the Guards depot, Caterham Barracks, Caterham, Surrey

1916 June 24 to 1917 May 5 --- In England

1917 May 6 to 1917 Oct 23 --- Expeditionary Force Overseas

1917 May 8 --- Posted to 2nd Battalion at Havre

1917 May 25 --- Joined 7th Entrenching Battn.

1917 Oct 9 --- Wounded G. S W. L. Buttock in the fields, sent back to England

1917 Oct 24 to 1918 March 30 --- In England

1917 Oct 24 to 1918 Jan 11 --- at The Military Hospital in York, for shell wound left buttock, 80 days in Hospital

1918 Mar 31 to 1919 Mar 21 --- Expeditionary Force Overseas

1918 Apr 1 --- Posted to 4th Battalion

1919 Feb 17 --- Transferred to 3rd. Battalion

1919 March 22 --- Returned to England

1919 March 22 to 1919 March 26 --- at Stoke-Upon-Trent War Hospital Newcastle, Staffs, for Influenza, 5 days in Hospital

1919 Nov 8 --- date of demobilization.

 

William George Punt’s military service ended on November 8, 1919.  His last position was in the 3rd Battalion of the Coldstream Guards.
