All signed their names on the marriage record except Elizabeth Prentice who leaves her mark.

James Murrell was Hannah’s brother who lived in Hadleigh, Essex.  Elizabeth Prentice is a family relative of Daniel Whitwell.

Daniel Whitwell was born ca. 1798 in Canewdon, Essex and was a son of James Whitwell.  Daniel was a Sea Waller.

James Murrell was a regular visitor to Canewdon since 1820 to see Daniel and Hannah Whitwell.

Also James and Hannah’s mother was living in Canewdon at the time when she got married in 1783 so they may have had other relatives in Canewdon before 1820.

Probably since the death of his wife, Elizabeth, in 1839, James Murrell’s daughter, Louisa Whitwell Murrell, have been living with Daniel and Hannah Whitwell who were childless.

Perhaps Louisa was learning housekeeping skills and more from her Aunt Hannah.

In 1841, Daniel and Hannah Whitwell were living in Canewdon, Essex.  Daniel was a Waller.   Their niece, Louisa Murrell, age 11, is living with them.

From the 1841 census of Canewdon:

Daniel Whitwell      40 M    Waller           y
Hannah      do         40 F                               y

In 1851, Daniel and Hannah Whitwell were living in Canewdon, Essex.  Daniel was a Sea Waller.  Susannah Spendle was living with them.

From the 1851 census of Canewdon:

Susannah Spendle was described as a “niece” but she was actually a grand-niece, a daughter of their niece Louisa Spendle.   Louisa was visiting her father, James Murrell, in Hadleigh, Essex at the time of the census.

Hannah Whitwell died at the age of 53 on October 16, 1851 in Canewdon, Essex.

From the newspaper, The Essex Standard, Tuesday, October 31, 1851, the following death notice if found:

“Oct. 16th, aged 53, Hannah, the wife of Mr. D. Whitwell, Canewdon.”
