The following is a report on the family of James Murrell of Hadleigh, Essex, England.  He was one of the (if not the most) famous Witch Doctor and Cunning man in 19th century England.

First Generation:

EDWARD MURRELL   ( ?  -  ? )

Edward lived in Hawkwell, Essex and married Hannah Dockrell of Canewdon and they lived in Hawkwell where their children were baptized.   Edward and Hannah were the parents of the Witch Doctor and Cunning Man James Murrell.

Second Generation:

JAMES MURRELL     (1785-1860)

James was born in Rochford, Essex and baptized in Hawkwell, Essex.   He is the man destined to be known as the Witch Doctor and Cunning man of Hadleigh, Essex.  James married Elizabeth ---?---.

HANNAH MURRELL   (1796-1851)

Hannah was born and baptized in Hawkwell, Essex.  She married Daniel Whitwell of Canewdon, Essex.  Daniel and Hannah Whitwell lived in Canewdon.

Third Generation:

ELIZA ANN MURRELL    (1818 - ? )

Eliza was born in Hadleigh, Essex and was a daughter of James & Elizabeth Murrell.  Eliza married James Leggett.

MATILDA MURRELL   (1819 - 1852)

Matilda was born in Hadleigh, Essex and was a daughter of James & Elizabeth Murrell.  Matilda married William Benson.

EDWARD MURRELL   (1824 - 1903)

Edward was born in Hadleigh, Essex and was a son of James & Elizabeth Murrell.  The only surviving son of the Cunning man.  He was known as Buck Murrell to his friends.

LOUISA WHITWELL MURRELL    (1830 - ? )

Louisa was born in Hadleigh, Essex and spent some time in Canewdon, Essex.  She was a daughter of James & Elizabeth Murrell.  Louisa married 1st. William Spendell and then married 2nd. Robert Felton.

ELEANOR MURRELL   (1834 - ? )

Eleanor was born in Hadleigh, Essex and was a daughter of James & Elizabeth Murrell.  Eleanor married 1st. Elijah Barker and then married 2nd. William Barrett.

The fourth Generation:

SUSANNAH WHITWELL SPENDELL    (1849 - ? )

Susannah was born in Canewdon, Essex and was a daughter of William Spendell and Louisa Whitwell Murrell.  Susannah married James Clements.

WILLIAM SPENDELL   (1850 - ? )

William was born in Canewdon, Essex and was a son of William Spendell and Louisa Whitwell Murrell.  He was an Agricultural Labourer.
